Ken Sparks announcement on Thursday; Day named All-American

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. (WVLT) - Carson-Newman head football coach Ken Sparks will hold a news conference at 11 am on Thursday to announce his coaching decision as he undergoes cancer treatment.

Sparks passed the 300 win mark this season.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (C-N Release) – The postseason accolades continue to pile up for Carson-Newman center Kevin Day (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.).

The senior was named to the AFCA All-America team Monday. Wednesday, Day finds himself on the Daktronics’ All-America second team. Day is the 38th Carson-Newman football player to make multiple all-America teams in the same season.

Michael Tribue was the last C-N player named to multiple all-America teams in the same year. The offensive lineman made the Daktronics team and’s All-America team in 2010.

Day helped clear the way for the nation’s top rushing offense in Division II. The Eagles piled up nearly 380 yards a game while scoring 52 rushing touchdowns. The 52 scores on the ground are the most among all schools in all divisions. Only FCS’ Georgia Southern averaged more yards rushing a game than C-N.

The Soddy-Daisy product is the only Tennessee native on either the first or second Daktronics’ teams. He is one of three SAC athletes honored. Catawba linebacker Cory Johnson landed on Daktronics’ first team, while SAC offensive player of the year and Wingate senior wide receiver Chris Bowden made the second team offense with Day.

Day won the SAC’s Jacobs Blocking Award for the league’s best offensive lineman and is a finalist for the Upshaw Award for the nation’s best offensive lineman.
