Lady Vols Add JUCO All-American Jasmine Phillips To Hoops Signing Class

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee Head Women’s Basketball Coach Holly Warlick has announced the addition of a junior college All-American to the 2011-12 signing class. Jasmine Phillips, from Louisburg (S.C.) College, has signed to play for the Lady Volunteers and becomes the fourth player to join the program heading into next season.

A 5-foot-11 forward who hails from Hartsville, S.C. (Hartsville H.S.), Phillips played the 2011-12 campaign at Louisburg and helped her team to a 30-2 record and a third-place finish in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. She averaged 16.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.7 steals in 29 contests as a freshman for the Hurricanes to earn NJCAA Division II All-America distinction. She will have three years of eligibility remaining.

As a high school senior, Phillips scored at a 21.5 points-per-game clip and averaged 13.2 rebounds, 5.3 steals and three blocks a game to garner 2011 South Carolina Class 3A Player of the Year accolades. She also earned a spot in the Carolinas Classic All-Star Game. Rated No. 61 nationally by ESPN HoopGurlz, she tallied 35 points, 24 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks in a third-round state playoff game vs. Dreher as senior.

“We’re excited to have Jasmine join our program,” Warlick said. “She is athletic, a great defender, a great rebounder and what you’d call a slasher. She will bring a lot of energy and athleticism to our team and add to our overall depth.

“That’s been our biggest priority, trying to add one or two players to our team to improve our depth. We needed more than nine players. She was one of the best players we went after, and I’m glad we got her.”

This marks the fourth junior college player signed by the Lady Vols since 1977. Alberta Auguste (Central Florida C.C.) and Shannon Bobbitt (Trinity Valley C.C.) signed in April 2006 and played on the 2007 and 2008 NCAA Championship squads at UT. Forward Zandra Montgomery transferred from Cleveland State (Tenn.) Community College and played at Tennessee from 1977-79.

Phillips joins a trio of signees from the high school ranks. That group includes Andraya Carter, a 5-8 point guard from Buford, Ga. (Buford H.S.), Bashaara Graves, a 6-2 forward from Clarksville, Tenn. (Clarksville H.S.), and Jasmine Jones, a 6-1 forward from Madison, Ala. (Bob Jones H.S.).
