Malnati, Bates featured at News Sentinel Open media day

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (release) -- Peter Malnati of Jefferson City & Ben Bates, visited with media and sponsors today during this year's HR Comp sponsored media day held at Ruth's Chris Steak House.

The Tournament will be played the week of August 11-17 at Fox Den Country Club.

Malnati is currently ranked 161 in the PGA TOUR FedEx Cup Standings with earnings of more than $260,000.. He has 3 Top 25 finishes this year. His 15th place finish at Mayakoba in Puerto Rico is his best this season.

Malnati birdied 5 of the last 7 holes
including Hole 18 to capture the 2013 News Sentinel Open presented by Pilot Championship. Malnati finished 18th last season on the TOUR money list to earn his PGA TOUR Card.

Bates is currently a member of the Champions TOUR and will compete later this week in the US Senior Open. Bates won twice on the TOUR, the 1997 Nike Wichita Open and the 2004 Reese’s Cup Classic in Hershey, PA. He played on the PGA TOUR
from 1998-2001.

The Knoxville News Sentinel is the title sponsor of one of the Tour's four original events that are still on the schedule. Knoxville is joined by Boise, Idaho, Springfield, Mo. and Wichita, Kan. in having hosted a Tour event every year since 1990. Fox Den Country Club has been the host venue in Knoxville every year
since 1999. Then News Sentinel Open is the oldest event by date on the TOUR.

The Knoxville News Sentinel and Pilot/Flying J are currently in the third year of a 3-year partnership with the PGA TOUR and Fox Den CC to host the News sentinel Open. The official name of the 2013 tournament will be the "News Sentinel Open presented by Pilot."

The Tour has been a fixture on the Knoxville sports scene, welcoming the future starters of the PGA TOUR to East Tennessee every year since the Tour's inception in 1990.

Past champions of the event who have gone on to capture PGA TOUR titles are Jeff Maggert (1990), Brian Henninger (1992), Tom Scherrer (1995), J. J. Henry (2000), Heath Slocum (2001), Vaughn Taylor (2003), Chez Reavie (2007), and Chris Kirk (2011).

Last year's News Sentinel Open presented by Pilot was won by Peter Malnati. Malnati shot 70-67-66-65- 268 to win by 1 stroke.
