No. 9 Kentucky tops No. 8 Lady Vols, 5-2

LEXINGTON, Ky. (release) -- Melissa Davin and Taylor Koenig each had two hits on Saturday but No. 9 Kentucky scored three runs late in the game to hand No. 8 Tennessee a 5-2 loss, knotting the season series at 1-1.

Tennessee (38-9, 13-7 SEC) scored both of its runs in the third inning. Kentucky (40-10, 13-7) scored two in the second, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Koenig went 2-for-3 and Davin went 2-for-4. Madison Shipman hit an RBI double and Megan Geer hit an RBI single up the middle.

Rainey Gaffin (5-3) took the loss after throwing 2.2 relief innings with one strikeout and two unearned runs allowed. Cheyanne Tarango started the game and had two strikeouts and two earned runs allowed. Erin Gabriel tossed 1.1 relief frames with two strikeouts and one earned run allowed.

UK relief pitcher Meagan Prince (8-3) earned the win after throwing three scoreless relief frames. Lauren Cumbess started the game, throwing four innings and allowing two earned runs.

Kentucky took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Cumbess hit a two-run home run to left field. Emily Gaines hit a leadoff single through the right side and Cumbess followed with a two-run shot off a 2-2 pitch from Tarango.

Tennessee answered with a pair of runs in the third inning to knot the game at 2-2. Tobler opened the inning with a leadoff double down the left field line. With one out, Shipman ripped an RBI double down the left field line to plate Tobler. Two batters later, Geer knocked a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Shipman and tie the game.

UK scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Griffin Joiner reached on an error at third base with one out and two batters later Nikki Sagermann hit an RBI single up the middle. Joiner and Sylver Samuel scored unearned runs and Sagermann was thrown out 8-4-2 on the play before the second run crossed the plate.

The Wildcats added one more run in the bottom of the sixth. Cumbess hit a leadoff double to left field and scored three batters later on Emily Jolly's sac fly to right field.
