Outright SEC title at stake on Senior night for Lady Vols

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Final home games are typically among the most emotional and memorable contests of a player’s career. The competitive juices should be flowing even more on Thursday night, as the eighth-ranked Tennessee women’s basketball team tries to win the SEC regular season championship outright on Senior Night.

No. 13 Texas A&M (21-7/11-3) comes to town for a 7 p.m. league match-up that will be televised on CSS and shown online via ESPN3. Tickets are available at UTTix.com or by calling 1-800-332-VOLS or 865-656-1200. The four-point play ticket special is being offered, granting buyers of four or more tickets a voucher for a free hot dog and soft drink with each ticket purchased.

The Lady Vols (22-5/13-1), who clinched at least a share of the SEC regular season title with a win over Arkansas on Sunday, coupled with losses by No. 10 Kentucky to LSU and A&M to Vanderbilt, will try to make Tennessee’s 17th SEC regular season title theirs alone.

A win vs. the Aggies on Thursday or vs. Kentucky on Sunday would accomplish that task and make the Lady Vols the top seed for the SEC Tournament on March 6-10 in Duluth, Ga. It also would give UT its third regular-season crown in the past four seasons and help for NCAA Tournament seeding purposes.

Kentucky, Georgia and Texas A&M are currently tied for second behind Tennessee at 11-3. The best all three could do is tie the Lady Vols for the regular season title. Seeding for the tourney would depend on the outcomes of the four teams’ remaining games.

Prior to the Thursday night’s game, seniors Taber Spani and Kamiko Williams will be recognized in an on-court ceremony. Fans are asked to be in their seats 20 minutes prior to tip off.

As an added bonus, the most recent NCAA trophy of Tennessee’s collection of eight will be on display before the game on the concourse behind section 116. Fans may have their photos taken with the 2008 hardware if they like.
