Renfroe picks up UT's fifth straight SEC honor

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The incredible roll continues for #6 Tennessee softball (38-6, 15-4 Southeastern Conference) as the league office on Monday selected freshman Ellen Renfroe as its SEC Softball Pitcher of the Week for April 18, making it five consecutive weeks a Lady Vol softball player has received a league award.

The total of Big Orange SEC softball honorees now climbs to seven overall through the first 10 weeks of the 2011 campaign. Ellen Renfroe previously reaped three consecutive nods by being chosen as the SEC Pitcher of the Week on March 28 and SEC Freshman of the Week on both March 21 and April 4.

Sophomore outfielders Raven Chavanne and Kat Dotson were tabbed the SEC Player of the Week on Feb. 14 and March 7, respectively.

First baseman/designated player Melissa Davin was selected as the SEC Freshman of the Week on April 11.

A Jackson, Tenn., native, Renfroe continued her amazing rookie campaign in the circle by going 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA, two complete games and 24 strikeouts in 14 innings of work during UT’s high-profile series sweep of #21/19 LSU over April 15-17 in Baton Rouge, La. The 6-0 right hander fired a three-hit shutout with 12 K’s on just 97 pitches during a series-opening 6-0 victory over the Bayou Bengals and permitted just one earned run on five hits with a dozen strikeouts in the finale as Tennessee prevailed, 7-2.

Now in possession of a 21-2 overall record with a 1.18 ERA and an impressive 8-1 in SEC action, Renfroe hasn’t lost a decision since back on March 13 at Kentucky (5-4 in 10 inn.). During that month-plus stretch she has gone a perfect 10-0 in the circle with a sterling 0.77 ERA, nine complete games and 117 K’s in 81.2 innings while registering victories over ranked squads such as #1 Alabama, #2 Georgia, #21 LSU (two wins) and #22 Auburn.

Lady Vol softball steps out of conference action on Tues., April 19, by hosting Radford in a single contest slated for a 6 p.m. ET first pitch at Lee Softball Stadium.
