Stokes works out for Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A Memphis native, Jarnell Stokes grew up going to Grizzlies games. He was even a season ticket holding, saying he sat in the "nose bleed."

Monday, however, the former Vol All-SEC selection had an on-court view.

Stokes, along with five other NBA draft prospects, worked out for the Grizzlies for roughly 80 minutes.

"I think I did pretty well," Stokes said afterward.

"I was able to show things I wasn't able to do in college. I think I showed that I was more explosive than what I showed in college. As a defender I think I did pretty good at defense today."

Stokes left Tennessee after his junior season. He averaged just over 15 points and 10 rebounds a game a season ago.

At 6'8" and 260 pounds, with very little body fat, Stokes is a big presence. After seeing Stokes in person, Memphis head coach David Joerger called him "massive."

"His hands are huge and he's pretty athletic," Joerger said. "You don't want to fall in love with somebody's body as an athlete, but he has a great body. He brings other things to the party too."

Stokes is projected to be a late first round or early second round selection. Memphis has the 22nd overall pick. The NBA draft takes place Thursday, June 26.
