Man dies after falling off GSMNP overlook while taking picture

The man reportedly suffered severe head trauma and died as a result of his injuries.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Officials with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park said a man is dead after he fell nearly 50 feet below an embankment.

Park rangers responded to a Chimney Tops overlook along Newfound Gap Road after receiving a report that a man fell approximately 50 feet below the embankment.

Authorities said 48-year-old Wesley Brandon Stedham of Alabama fell after he stepped down a steep slope below the overlook for a photograph.

The man reportedly suffered severe head trauma and died as a result of his injuries.
