KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Officials with the Knoxville Fire Department warned drivers to avoid the intersection of Middlebrook Pike and Liberty Street due to an overturned tractor-trailer.

Knoxville fire crews were dispatched to the crash around 9:22 a.m. Wednesday. When firefighters arrived on the scene, bystanders were pulling the driver of the tanker from the overturned tanker.

The overturned tanker truck spilled diesel fuel on the road, according to KFD.

Two other vehicles were involved in the crash. KFD crews pulled the driver of a Dodge Ram from one of the crashed vehicles. The driver of the diesel fuel tanker and the driver of the Dodge Ram were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

KFD’s hazmat unit was able to plug the tanker’s rupture and contain the diesel spill from going into a storm drain. The truck and trailer were offloaded, uprighted and removed Wednesday afternoon.

The area was evacuated and Middlebrook Pike is expected to be closed into the evening while crews clean up nearly 2,400 gallons of fuel. Traffic will be instructed to detour around the incident.
