KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - East Tennessee Boys Scouts are recognizing the men and women who are making a difference in the lives of young boys and girls. It’s hosting the 11th Annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. and Elbert K. Fretwell Service Awards Dinner Thursday night at the Jackson Terminal in Downtown Knoxville.

Each award recipient has a long track record of helping young people.

Among the half a dozen honorees are teachers putting in overtime with students, young adults helping teens land jobs, and volunteers who are just doing their part to see a better East Tennessee.

Jonathan Curry with Upward Bound told WVLT News the honor is helping him take a step back and be proud of the work the organization has done, especially during a pandemic.

“We really had to adapt to service our youth in the program. Everything from Zoom meetings to one day events, so it’s been really helpful to engage and keep their interests going to we can continue their advancement and make sure they are prepared for the challenges ahead,” Curry said.

The in-person event is held at the Jackson Terminal at 6:30 p.m.

There will be a live stream for viewers to watch from home.
