MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WVLT) - Officials with the Memphis Police Department said an unintentional shooting left a child in critical condition.

According to police, a mother and her 5-year-old son were asleep when a neighbor’s gun unintentionally went off.

The woman told police she woke up to her son screaming and covered in blood.

The 5-year-old was transported to Methodist Germantown where is listed in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the leg. The child’s mother was grazed by the bullet, according to police.

Investigators said Paul Hill, who lives above the victim came running downstairs screaming that his AR-15 went off by accident.

Hill was taken into custody and questioned. He admitted to picking up his gun and said it accidentally went off inside his apartment.

Hill is charged with reckless endangerment.
