KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it will be extending emergency school meal waivers.

Officials announced the program will not end as originally planned on September 30. The program will continue through June 30, 2022.

The extended Child Nutrition Program aims to help the nearly 12 million children in the U.S. dealing with food insecurity during the pandemic.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said the program will also increase the reimbursement rate to school meal operators so they can serve healthy foods to the kids.

“USDA will remain relentless in ensuring our nation’s children get the critical nutrition they need,” Vilsack said. “USDA answered the call to help America’s schools and childcare institutions serve high-quality meals while being responsive to their local needs as children safely return to their regular routines.”
