KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Baseball is back in Kodak! Tuesday night, the 2021 version of the Tennessee Smokies are hoping to hear the cry, play ball, something thaat didn’t happen last year due to the pandemic.

As excited as anyone is Smokies team president Chris Allen, “You know, it’s exciting, isn’t I mean I’ll tell you. Who would have thought we’d have went through everything that we went through the last year and a half but baseball’s back and we’re ready to crank.”

It was great to see the guys back on the diamond on Monday in anticipation of the new season, there are certainly some new faces and there are some old faces returning as well, including manager Mark Johnson who will be on the Tennessee bench this season says Allen, “He’s our manager is also a roving coach for the cubs. So Mark is very experienced in his role he’s doing a great job. He’s always done a great job and we also have experienced team with a lot of the guys back for 2019.”

A new season for the Smokies, and really, a new season for everybody associated with the sport after Major League Baseball restructured the minor leagues. It’s pretty much the same team’s but it is no longer the Southern League. Tennessee is now in what they call the Double-A South. A new name, but same baseball, same type of fan experience here at the stadium according to Allen, “We’re going to sell our seats like we would any other season. I know there’s a lot of excitement about the potential move of downtown, and that’s something that we’ll worry about when that happens right that happens. What I’m doing my staff, my main job is to make sure we show you a good time when you come out here to the ballpark, clean, nice and give you the best amenities we possibly can.”

Allen says the main goal right now is to make sure the product on the field, and the fan experience as as good as it could possibly be. First pitch Tuesday night against Montgomery’s for 7:00 pm.
