KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Knoxville Civic Coliseum crowd was ready to explode and was having some fun early on Cinco de Mayo against Pensacola.

Between the first and second periods, the fans were treated to a little Pinata Pounding by an Ice Bear fan down on the Ice. Check out the attached video to see the sombrero trick.

The Ice Flyers would skate out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, but if the Bears were in hibernation, they would wake up. Knoxville’s first goal came courtesy of Austin Plevy who was out in front of the net, picked up the loose puck and put it in between the pipes.

Not long after that Knoxville would get it’s second and as it turns out final goal of the night on a slap shot by Johnny Curran. Mathieu Roy served as a great distraction in front of the goal as the Ice Bears took a 2-1 lead.

Again, that would be the last time the home team would light the lamp Wednesday night. Pensacola had 21 shots on goal to just 4 for the Ice Bears in the second period as the visitors jumped out to a 4-2 lead.

Pensacola would go on the add an insurance goal in the 3rd period and go on to win 5-2 taking a 1-0 series lead. Game-2 of this best of three set will take place Friday night at 7:35 pm. in Pensacola. An Ice Flyers win and they’ll play for the President’s Cup. A third game, if necessary, would be back in Knoxville on Sunday.
