KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Tennessee football and first-year head football coach Josh Heupel will debut two days early, according to the University of Tennessee athletics department.

The game is now slated for Thursday, September 2 and kickoff is at 8 p.m. ET.

The opener was originally planned for Saturday, September 4.

“Any time you consider moving football games to a weekday—which is rare—you want to be sensitive to out-of-town fans who have to make plans to travel to Knoxville,” Tennessee Director of Athletics Danny White said.

The 2021 opener will commence the centennial celebration of Neyland Stadium, which originally opened in 1921. This will be just the second time the Vols meet Bowling Green on the field.
