KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Tennessee Department of Transportation released pictures of the crack in the Interstate 40 bridge that spans the Mississippi River.

The bridge was shut down Tuesday afternoon after authorities found the crack using drones.

Traffic, which quickly backed up, was rerouted to the I-55 bridge about three miles south of the I-40 bridge. River traffic has also been shut down until further notice, the TDOT said.

The department is working with the Arkansas Department of Transportation to ensure the bridge is safe before it reopens. The picture of the crack was released during a press event, during which the department said the inspection is still underway. The TDOT said it could take a couple of weeks to finish the investigation and reopen the bridge.

The department said it would release a timeline as soon as it has one and urged commenters to use alternate routes in the meantime.
