SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Fitness meets fun exploration at a new monthly outing that’s free for all ages. The Tri-County Trailblazers invite people in Jefferson, Cocke and Sevier Counties to come on a hike or walk to a different park or historic area each time. Dozens of people are turning out, and they are showing that fitness has no age limit. The walks are organized by the University of Tennessee Extension Family and Consumer Science agents in the three counties.

UT Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent in Jefferson County, Sarah Vaden, said, “We knew everybody needed to get out and start walking and enjoying the beauty that’s in East Tennessee. And of course we need it for our health.” Vaden and her colleagues include stretching before the walks and add guest speakers and tours to add an educational and social element to the outings. Their first was at Chestnut Hill Park near the Bush Beans Visitors Center. “Just to get to see smiling faces I think was the thing that excited them the most!” said Vaden.

Dee Shepard started with the Chestnut Hill hike and said she enjoys regularly getting out for walks like this. “I did the three miles. Oh my it was just fantastic!”

Bernice Cudzilo said she thought her entire Silver Sneakers class that usually meets in Dandridge also needed to try these hikes. “I got all the information and took the paperwork to our class and I signed up all the ladies.”

The May Trailblazers outing was in downtown Sevierville, with a guided tour by a historian. It included a stop at the Sevier County Courthouse and Sevier County Heritage Museum. The group gathers at 10:00 am the morning of each walk. Events conclude with door prizes and free educational materials.
