KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - “It’s literally life or death,” says former Vol and NFL star Albert Haynesworth.

A mountain of a man, Haynesworth could tackle any situation on the football field, but big Al found himself battling a much more fierce opponent, kidney failure, “About two years ago I started dialysis to stay alive and starting in July of 2019 roughly 2000 people called in to try and donate for me.”

Enter Zach Penny from Arkansas who isn’t a Tennessee fan and never met Albert Haynesworth, but to use a sports analogy, knew he was meant to lend a major assist, “So this has kind of been on my heart for a couple of years, probably since about 2017 When I first kind of started learning about kidney donation and kidney awareness.”

The process of donating, doesn’t happen over night, but the need is alarming and this most genuine of gestures most certainly can save a life says Haynesworth, ”I know it’s a hard thing to do but you’re literally an angel, literally saving a life. When I got it I was definitely stoked and I’m definitely stoked still because it works perfectly. I feel a lot better and can see a difference in my skin.”

Zach and Albert are now linked forever the two got to meet for the very first time after Albert received Zach’s kidney,”So it was kind of funny, I walked in, we shook hands. We got introduced and then he asked me where I’m from, and I mentioned I’m from Arkansas and of course, Albert said oh great a Razorback!”

The VFL added, ”It’s still Arkansas but he has to be a Vol now , he’s part Vol and I guess I’m part Razorback.”

An unselfish act bringing two unlikely partners together offering us a life lesson in love and kindness. Here are some links you can reach out to if you’re considering or have any questions about being an organ donor:
