Three vaccinated Kentuckians will become millionaires

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - Thee vaccinated Kentuckians will soon become millionaires.

During a Friday afternoon news conference, to encourage people to get vaccinated, Governor Beshear announced the ‘Shot at a Million’ giveaway:

Kentuckians 18 years of age and older, who have received at least their first COVID-19 vaccination if receiving the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or one dose if receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, have a chance to win one of three $1 million prizes.

The governor also announced that Kentuckians between the ages of 12 and 17, who have received at least their first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination, may enter for a chance to win one of fifteen, full scholarships, including room-and-board, tuition, and books, to any Kentucky public college, university, technical or trade school.

The winners will be announced on July 2, July 30 and August 27.

Beshear has said he wants 2.5 million Kentuckians vaccinated before he cancels all Covid restrictions on June 11. At an event in Corbin Thursday, he said more than 2 million people have been vaccinated.

“Right now, if you’re on the fence and you have taken the time to learn about it, it’s also a good incentive to call your doctor, it’s a good incentive to get online and do something that’s not crazy and read what some of the experts are saying,” Gov. Beshear said.

He also made an announcement on the state’s eviction prevention efforts. Gov. Beshear said Lexington will receive an additional $11.7 million in state Covid relief funds.

Mayor Gorton said the money will help with eviction relief. She said, so far, the city has kept more than 500 people from being evicted from their homes at a cost of nearly $3.2 million.

At the end of March, Governor Andy Beshear extended the state’s moratorium on evictions due to the pandemic. Beshear said the moratorium would help Kentuckians, who may be struggling financially due to the pandemic, remain healthy at home as more people get vaccinated.

He made the decision after the CDC extended the federal eviction ban until June 30.

Beshear also reminded the public that $264 million of COVID relief funds went into the Team Kentucky Healthy at Home Eviction Relief Fund.

The money helps tenants get caught up with rent and utilities.

We spoke to some landlords who complained about not getting enough help from the Eviction Relief Fund. They said slow application processing put them behind on bills regarding their rental properties.
