Better Business Bureau warns people about scammers claiming to sell rental cars

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Rental cars are in demand. Tony Binkley with the Better Business Bureau says scammers are using buyers’ desperation to get money.
“There are shortages in new cars and used cars and the rental car company is no different. There is a shortage of cars and rental car prices are at all-time highs,” said Binkley.
Binkley says scammers call from people to tell them about a rental opportunity with a chance to save them some money. They say if you pay with a gift card they will give you a good deal. They claim to be calling from reputable companies like Enterprise Rental Cars.
Enterprise Rental Cars confirmed with WVLT News that scammers call and claim to be employees from their company to get your attention. In a statement, they say they will not ask a customer to pay for a car over the phone. Payment is also not required when making a reservation.
Binkley says the scammers may call from a number with a Houston area code. To check if the deal is real, hang up and call back the number from the company’s official website and ask about the deal.
