ATV rider accused of attacking THP trooper in custody
TRACY CITY, Tenn. (WSMV) - A man accused of assaulting a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper during a traffic stop on Sunday night is now in custody, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
According to Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum, Austin Gage McHone, 24, of Tracy City, Tennessee, turned himself in without incident.
According to THP’s report, on Sunday at 11:30 p.m., THP Chattanooga district Trooper Sam Johnson initiated a traffic stop on McHone, who was operating an all-terrain vehicle. To evade arrest, McHone allegedly struck Trooper Johnson’s patrol vehicle with the ATV. As Johnson then tried to apprehend McHone, he hit Trooper Johnson.
Officials said a lengthy struggle ensued, from which McHone could get back onto the ATV and then flee from the immediate area.
Trooper Johnson was reportedly treated and released from Emerald Hodgson Hospital with minor injuries.
McHone has been charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and felony evading.
He is set to appear in General Sessions Court on July 12. Bond has not been established for McHone.
