Weekday Evening Meteorologist
Austin Bowling is a meteorologist for WVLT News and can be seen weeknights at
5, 6, 10 and 11. The East Tennessee native is excited to be back in his hometown.
He spent much of his childhood on his family's property in Rocky Hill.
Many of his relatives didn’t live too far away. His grandparents attended Bearden.
His parents went to Farragut. While he attended West High School, he would end up
graduating in a suburb of Raleigh, North Carolina before going on to earn his Bachelor's degree
in Meteorology from the North Carolina State University. During that time in college,
he would spend a summer as an intern in the weather department at WVLT!
Austin started his career working weekends at KSWO in Lawton-Fort Sill, OK, a city in
southwest Oklahoma with strong military and agriculture communities. He
spent a couple years on the morning show before being named the station's chief
meteorologist in 2014. His reputation as a voice of calm during the severe weather
season earned him praise in the region. His expertise was even called upon by local
schools, state emergency management, the National Weather Service and even the
U.S. Army and Air Force.
He comes back to Knoxville with his wife, Kristie, whom he met during his time in
Oklahoma, and their dog, Sheba. They both love to travel, take in a little baseball
and also stay active in their church. Personally, Austin enjoys playing disc golf,
ball golf, caring for reptiles and is an all-around sports fan. He's been known to
play trombone in a few ensembles and umpire several middle and high school baseball
Austin says his time in Tornado Alley, both forecasting and storm chasing, coupled
with growing up in East Tennessee have prepared him for the ever-changing weather
of this region. He stepped up to the challenge in Oklahoma.
Now he's ready fora new challenge much closer to home.
