CLINTON, Tenn. (WVLT) -- An East Tennessee native has been chosen as a finalist for 2018's Sailor of the Year.
Naval Air Crewman 1st Class Billie J. Tackett, of Clinton, was recently named a finalist for Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) in Pensacola at a ceremony onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola at the National Naval Aviation Museum on Dec. 5.
Tackett serves as the leading petty officer for accessions detailing on the NETC in Millington, Tenn., according to a press release from the Navy Office of Community Outreach.
Tackett, who is working to obtain a bachelor's degree in business management, was one of seven who competed for the title, from a pool of over 8,000 military members. He received a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
"Serving in the Navy has been an exciting adventure and a humbling experience," said Tackett. "I have been fortunate to have learned from and to have been mentored by some of the Navy's best. The overall experience has made me a better leader, and I intend to continue to mold my leadership style as I learn from senior and junior Sailors."
