Athens police: Man, woman made up story about stabbing suspects

ATHENS, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Two people were arrested after a reported stabbing at an Athens apartment complex.

A release from the Chief of Police in Athens said that investigators were called to the Clem Jones Apartment complex around 10:30 p.m. on June 9.

Investigators were approached by two people, Dylan Carter and Whitney Scruggs. Carter was bleeding from his left arm and trying to stop the bleeding with a towel, according to the release. He told police that he had been stabbed and the two gave names and descriptions of two potential suspects.

Carter was transported to an area hospital while investigators searched for the suspects.

As the investigation continued, police found that Scruggs had actually stabbed Carter and their statement to police about other suspects had been a lie.

Police said Scruggs had stabbed Carter during a fight. Scruggs was transported to the McMinn County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and false report. Carter was released from the hospital and charged with simple assault and false report.
