Brianna Mason makes history as Miss Tennessee winner

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Miss Tennessee 2019 has been crowned.

Brianna Mason, Miss Greene County, is Saturday night's pageant winner. The 23-year-old is the first woman of color ever to be crowned Miss Tennessee in the Miss America pageant system.

She said, "I'm here to tell you that it does not matter what your skin color is. It does not matter what your religion is. You can do anything that you want."

Brianna is a first grade teacher in Murfreesboro, TN. She studied at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.

Brianna will receive a $15,000 scholarship. The first runner-up is Lauren Dickson, Miss Lexington. She will receive a $10,000 scholarship.

16 total contestants took the stage at Thompson-Boling Arena Saturday night competing for the title.
