#8 UT Softball opens season with DH sweep

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- The 8th ranked Tennessee softball team opened it's 2019 schedule with a pair of wins at the Kickin' Chicken Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The Lady Vols defeated the University of Illinois at Chicago 13-2 Friday morning. Then in the afternoon game, it was UT besting Coastal
Carolina 3-2.

Freshman catcher Ally Shipman led UT at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Shipman hit the double that gave the Lady Vols the lead in the fourth inning.

Junior pitcher Caylan Arnold took the mound to start the contest, recording nine strikeouts through 6.0 frames. Arnold allowed just one run on six hits to record the win. Moss came on in the seventh with a runner on first and no outs. She retired her three batters faced to earn the save.

Both teams traded scoreless innings until the fourth when the Lady Vols plated two runs. Chelsea Seggern led off with a double to center followed by an Amanda Ayala walk. Shipman then came up big, doubling to left field to clear the bases. The inning ended on a strikeout before UT could scratch another run across.

The Lady Vols scored again in the fifth to make it a 3-0 ballgame. Ashley Morgan was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on Savannah Huffstetler's sacrifice bunt. Two at-bats later, Jenna Holcomb knocked an RBI-single to center.

Coastal Carolina plated its lone run in the bottom of the stanza. Samantha Sack sent a solo shot over the right field wall with one out.

Both the Lady Vols and Chanticleers put runners on in the sixth and seventh innings, but to no avail, as neither team scored.

Tennessee is scheduled to play two games on Saturday. The first game will be against UIC at 4:15 p.m. ET and the second will be versus Boston University at 6:30 p.m. ET.
