Suspect charged with ten counts of attempted murder after Sevierville standoff
Two people were taken into custody after an officer-involved shooting and standoff at a hotel in Sevierville Tuesday afternoon.
31-year old Richard Smith of Knoxville, TN has been charged with ten counts of attempted first-degree murder.
22-year old Megan Arnold of Church Hill, TN, who was in the hotel room during the incident, was charged with criminal responsibility for facilitation of a felony.
Smith and Arnold are scheduled to appear in court on March 27 for a preliminary hearing.
According to a release from Knox County Sheriff's Office, deputies were investigating a burglary and stolen vehicle just after 1 p.m. when shots were fired at officers through the hotel door.
KCSO said deputies did not return fire. No officers were struck by the shots.
According to Bob Stahlke of Sevierville Police, officers responded to the scene to back up the Knox County Sheriff's Office who were at the Days Inn on the 3000 block of Winfield Dunn Parkway near Highway 66.
Officials said the SPD SWAT team responded nearly 30 minutes later. Both suspects were surrounded and arrested by SPD, according to reports. Police said two handguns were recovered.
Days Inn management told WVLT the two had stayed at the hotel for a week before the incident.
Wendy's, KenJo and the Fireworks Super Market were all shut down during the investigation.
No injuries were reported. KCSO will continue to investigate.
