Benefits behind apple cider vinegar

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- In French, it's known as "sour wine", but it's benefits aren't so sour.

"Apple cider vinegar is something we have been using for ages," said Dr. Pete Sulack, America's Leading Stress Expert. "Our grandmothers' and our great grandmothers' had apple cider vinegar in their homes."

It's all about the kind you buy. When you go to the grocery store, you want it to be raw, unfiltered, and murkier than the regular vinegar. It's called Apple Cider Vinegar with the 'Mother".

"The 'Mother' is the murky part of apple cider vinegar. The 'Mother' has all the nutrients in it," said Dr. Pete. "It has the good enzymes and probiotics,"

It takes weeks and sometimes months to make.

"It's the fermentation process that allows us to get those good rich probiotics," said Dr. Pete.

You're going to find it in the cooking aisle, but it can be used for much more than just baking muffins. It can help your body on the inside and out.

Starting with the inside, Dr. Pete said it can help fight fat.

"It's going to allow our body to do what it's created to do -- get the blood sugar out of the blood stream and into storage places, like the liver and the muscle," said Dr. Pete.

All you have to do is take a tablespoon before each meal. That will help keep that sugar from turning into fat.

The American Diabetes Association said it can even help control Type 2 Diabetes.

"Having a tablespoon before a meal will lower blood glucose levels and help with insulin," said Dr. Pete.

Dr. Pete said there's many natural remedies that aren't proven by science. Taking a tablespoon every hour when you feel like you're getting sick can kick your cold.

"Everything from helping skin blemishes to helping bruises go away faster," said Dr. Pete.

He told Local 8 News apple cider vinegar should be used as part of an overall healthy lifestyle.

"Just taking apple cider vinegar is not the key," said Dr. Pete. "It's part of a good healthy diet, a good exercise program, making choices in alignment with the vision for your life."
