Big Ed's Pizza marks 48 Years in Oak Ridge
It's been 48 years since Ed Neusel founded his pizza place on Broadway Avenue in Oak Ridge. He and his son David are gone now, but the business remains in the family.
General manager Jon Harris said, "We've kept the same recipe ever since 1970. We still use Big Ed's recipe for our dough. We still use his sauce recipe. We still get the cheese from the same company, Sartori, in Wisconsin. We get it shipped directly down here."
The menu consists of hand-tossed pizzas, fountain drinks and beer.
"It's all very simple, but good quality," Harris said.
48 years later, the business still supports community efforts such as sports for children. Reminders of this line the walls, from trophies to footballs to plaques and signed photos.
"Everything you see in the restaurant was given to Big Ed. There's a lot of history on the walls," Harris said.
Big Ed's is a favorite spot for regulars who come for business lunches, weekend gatherings and even special occasions.
Local resident Keith Mason brought his sister for a birthday lunch. He said, "We've eaten at Big Ed's ever since we moved to Oak Ridge. And I've had Big Ed's Pizza on my birthday every year since I was in grade school."
The restaurant is not offering any particular specials for its 48th anniversary. It is known for its no-nonsense approach to food and laid back setting.
