SPEEDWELL, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Claiborne County Sheriff's Office is investigating the drowning death of a child on Saturday afternoon.

The CCSO said a 5-year-old child died as a result of drowning on the Powell River near a boat dock. Rescuers got the call Saturday afternoon between 4 and 5 p.m. in the Earls Hollow area of Speedwell.

Authorities said a man who was a family friend of the victim took the child, his nephew, and the victim's twin sibling to swim when the victim got into deep water over his head.

The CCSO said when the man saw the child was struggling in the water, a bystander retrieved the child and brought him to shore to begin CPR. Authorities said Tennessee State Trooper Rex Bailey was the first on the scene, and performed CPR until EMS responders arrived.

The child was taken to the Claiborne County Emergency Room, where officials said he was pronounced dead after several attempts to revive him using CPR.
