Cocke County Sheriff's Office investigating accidental drowning

The Cocke County Sheriff's Office is investigating an accidental drowning of a 14 year old boy.

Deputies say it happened at about 4:00 Saturday in a small rock quarry off Pappys Way in Cocke County.

The victim has been identified as Tyler Sisk, 14.

Deputies say Sisk's 13-year-old friend was with him when it happened.

His friend told deputies they both decided to walk in water which had accumulated in a small rock quarry currently being mined. Both boys were walking together in knee deep water which was very muddy with had no visibility.

While walking both boys reached a point in the quarry where there was a very deep drop off they didn't know about. Both of them went under water and struggled to reach the surface.

Sisk's friend was able to make it to a shallow part of the water but couldn't find Sisk. That's when he ran to a nearby home and called.

Search and rescue began and after 45 minutes Paramedic Jason Boatright with First call EMS located the boy unresponsive in 8-15 feet of water near a steep drop off.

The paramedic had to dive deep under water to recover the victim. Cocke county fire fighters and Deputy Logan Staritt helped in moving the boy to the bank. Emergency personnel worked to resuscitate him as UT Life Star stood by to air lift the victim.

According to family Sisk did not know how to swim.

The Cocke County Sheriff's Office said in a release "The investigation is ongoing and our thought and prayers are continuing for all those affected by this tragedy. "
