Washington D.C (WVLT) -- Top medical experts suggest your consciousness carries on functioning, briefly, after your heart stops beating. Researchers came up with this theory by talking with cardiac arrest survivors who were aware of what was going on around them before they were successfully resuscitated and brought back to life.
Dr. Sam Parnia studies consciousness after death. He suggests people may even hear themselves being pronounced dead by doctors, as their brain may be the last to shutdown/die even though the rest of their body and all movement have ceased functioning.
