Driver strikes other vehicle, metal utility pole in fatal accident, SPD reports

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- According to a preliminary police report from the Sevierville Police Department, a vehicle accident near Winfield Parkway resulted in a fatality on Sunday.

According to the report, two vehicles were traveling north on SR 66. A White Ford f-150, driven by 48-year-old David Belcher was in the left lane and a blue Nissan Altima driven by 19- year-old Chandniben Patel was in the right lane of the roadway. The Ford was traveling partially on the sidewalk when it reentered the roadway and struck the other car.

Belcher then continued driving across the median, traveling across three southbound lanes, eventually driving through a guard rail and crashing into a utility pole. He was pronounced dead on the scene of the accident.

Patel was not injured according to police. The driver did consent to blood test for alcohol and drugs. The report states that drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be the cause of the crash.

The cause of the accident has not yet been released.
