GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Gatlinburg is celebrating the Earth this week with many Earth Week events planned around the area.

Thursday, local students got a chance to get some first hand lessons on how to protect the environment at the Earth Day Festival in Mynatt Park.

"It's important they learn early. You hear you can't teach and old dog new tricks, so if you could teach a child at a young age to protect our environment, recycling, reducing waste you know to take care of their environment the better it is if they begin early," said Jason Davis, Keep Sevier Beautiful.

More events are planned through Friday afternoon including the Earth Day 5K Run/Walk which starts at 10pm in Gatlinburg.

Gatlinburg dedicates an entire week to celebrate caring for the earth with events designed to share easy green practices through games, crafts and music, opportunities to get outside and maybe even get your hands dirty!
