'I was so tired of doing this by myself,' said woman arrested for abandoning kids

NC (WVLT) -- A 38-year-old North Carolina woman was arrested and charged after she was accused of abandoning her nine-year-old and 19-month-old on the side of a road.

"I know what I did was wrong, But I just...I was so tired of doing this by myself," Jennifer Jean Westfall told a local news outlet. "I have the strength to do what I need to do, but I don't think I have the skills to make the income that I need to take care of my family. Nobody will hire me."

Westfall was arrested pm two counts of misdemeanor child abuse after she reportedly left the two children on a road near an elementary school in Fuquay-Varina.

According to CBS46, another woman saw the children and called the school's resource officer who picked up the kids and transported them to the school.

Westfall reportedly told a different story, claiming that she dropped them off on campus and watched a woman take them, which she assumed was a legal way to abandon them.

She was arrested on Monday and released on Wednesday.

"I've been around everywhere," she said. "With these charges, I don't see how I'm ever getting my kids back."
