KPD: 5-year-old found naked, alone at motel; parents face felony charges

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A mother and father were arrested on felony charges after Knoxville Police officers said they found the couple's 5-year-old son naked and alone in a motel hallway.

The officers responded to the Red Roof Inn, 209 Advantage Place, at 11:30 p.m. on March 3 to reports of a child running around unsupervised. According to the arrest report, officers found the boy naked in the hallway. The 5-year-old allegedly told officers he was hungry, thirsty and unable to get back into the room where he was staying with his parents.

The officers tracked down the parents' room and went inside, but they said nobody was present. A taxi driver allegedly told officers he had given the parents a ride to some grocery stores in the area.

The parents, identified as Phillip Comer and Samantha Stransky, allegedly were at the grocery store for two hours. Investigators said they questioned them once they returned around 1 a.m. According to the arrest report, Comer and Stransky admitted to leaving the boy on his own while they got groceries.

The Department of Children's Services was notified, and once on the scene a DCS employee tested the parents' urine for illicit substances. The report showed the tests came back positive, both allegedly for methamphetamine and Comer's allegedly for ecstasy as well.

Comer and Stransky were charged with one count each of child neglect. Their preliminary hearing was on Monday and will go back to court on April 17 to face those charges.
