KPD identifies suspect killed following attempted burglary

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Knoxville Police Department officers responded to a call of a burglary in progress of an occupied home overnight Thursday in the 2400 block of Lamp Drive at around 1:22 a.m.

During the break in, the suspect was shot by a resident.

According to KPD, the suspect began beating on the door of the Lamp Drive residence. When he could not get in through the door, the man tried to break into a window while armed with a handgun.

Police said one of the homeowners fired his weapon and hit the suspect as he came into the house.

The Knoxville Fire Department and AMR pronounced the suspect dead on the scene.

An autopsy was conducted to identify the suspect, and police are contacting next-of-kin.

On Friday night, KPD identified the man as 24-year-old Christopher Desmarais.

The homeowners were taken to the Safety Building and interviewed before being released.
