KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- In a press release, Knoxville Police said the man who was trapped in the ventilation system at 17th Street Market and Deli has died.

Police identified the man as 21-year-old Kell Gammeltoft.

"I walked into work and I saw a man dangling from the ceiling," said an employee.

Police said they heard someone screaming for help as they approached the building, then saw a man dangling from the ceiling above the stove top in the kitchen.

A report from KPD said Gammeltoft told police he had been trapped in the ventilation system since the early night hours of June 5.

Investigators said they believe he got into the vent by removing the vent cap on the roof, then putting his legs inside.

According to the report, Gammeltoft lost consciousness and a pulse during the rescue effort. He was transported to University of Tennessee Medical Center where he died June 10.
