Kentucky bourbon production hit a nearly 50-year high last year.

An industry group said Wednesday the state's distilleries filled nearly 1.9 million bourbon barrels last year, the highest level since 1967.

The Kentucky Distillers' Association says more than 6.6 million barrels are aging in warehouses dotting the landscape in the state's bourbon country, the most since 1974.

KDA President Eric Gregory says production should keep rising, with a handful of larger distilleries starting production later in the year, with more scheduled to open in a year or two.

One of the newcomers is the Bardstown Bourbon Co.

Its president and CEO, David Mandell, says the distillery expects production to be near capacity soon after opening in September, meaning an expansion could soon be in the works.
