Local athlete wins Boomer Esiason Foundation Athlete of the Year
Avery Flatford received the most votes in the contest to name her the Boomer Esiason Foundation Athlete of the Year.
Avery Flatford battles Cystic Fibrosis but she hasn't allowed the chronic disease to stop her from enjoying the sport she love most, softball.
Cystic Fibrosis is a hereditary disease affecting the lungs and digestive system. Avery needs daily breathing treatments just to be able to compete and enjoy life like a normal kid, but she handles it all with incredible poise and maturity. "You have to know that's what you need to do to stay healthy and able to do those kind of things, stay with your friends, play the sport you love and everything"
That courage and her skill on the field have led to a nomination for the Boomer Esiason Foundation Athlete of the Year award. It's an award that the public votes on and Avery is close to winning the competition
