A gang member was convicted of biting off the tip of a Knoxville police officer's thumb.

Prosecutors say Alexander Ray Johnson was pulled over for speeding and driving without a license plate in June of 2017. His vehicle had a plate claiming a right to travel as a

"Sovereign Hebrew Israelite."

Johnson would not provide a valid driver's license and argued with KPD officer Tim Edwards about whether speeding was a crime. As he was arrested, Johnson fought officers, kicking and punching them. Officer Trey lane arrived as backup. During the fight, Johnson bit the tip off of Officer Lane's right thumb, causing permanent damage.

Johnson has been convicted of Aggravated Assault and two counts of assault. Prosecutors say he could face a sentence of three to six years in prison, and they will ask for the maximum. Prosecutors also say the jury found Johnson to be a member of the Bloods criminal street gang.

Sentencing is set for March 28.
