Martin Luther King Day events and closures around Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- It's time to celebrate the life of civil rights pioneer, Martin Luther King Jr.

Several events will take place honoring King throughout the weekend, capped off by the annual MLK Jr. Day parade Monday morning beginning at 8:30 at Chilhowee Park.

A memorial service will be held immediately following the parade at Overcoming Believers Church at 211 Harriet Tubman Street.

On Saturday, January 19, the YWCA will host the Race Against Racism.

The Race Against Racism will include a 5K, one mile run and a kids fun run starting at 12:30 p.m. The race will begin at the YWCA's location at 124 South Cruze Street.

Government offices, banks, and schools will be out in observance of the holiday.

Looking for a place for your children while they're out of school? Many youth organizations are closed Monday, including:

- Emerald Youth Foundation
- Boys and Girls Clubs
- Yoke Youth Ministries
- YWCA (participating in the parade)

However, YMCA locations across Knoxville will operate on normal hours.
