Mayor announces first steps in selling Andrew Johnson Building

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett announced the first steps in selling the Andrew Johnson Building.

Mayor Tim Burchett scheduled a press conference at 2 p.m. Tuesday at his office on Main Street.

The Andrew Johnson Building is located at 912 South Gay Street in Knoxville. The downtown high rise building serves as Knox County Schools’ central office.

Officials said people would see some movement in the sale in the next couple of years, but there have not been any official proposals or offers for the building yet.

Mayor Burchett said the long term goal is to breakeven with tax dollars saying, "Government is not a good steward of your property."

New Knox County Schools superintendent said it would be easier for the central office to operate in a more horizontal building.
