KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- McGhee Tyson Airport saw "record breaking growth", and made some major announcements Wednesday.
Airport authorities said more than two million passengers traveled through McGhee Tyson in 2018, and is already seeing 12 percent growth in 2019.
Officials said the airport is beginning a $110 million Airfield Modernization Project.
Allegiant Air, which Knoxville is a base operations hub and now includes 100 employees, will add 20 percent more flights from TYS. The newest flight will be to Pittsburgh, starting Friday.
American Airlines is also adding two new flights to Miami and LaGuardia Airport in New York City.
Airport officials also announced large planes are returning to Knoxville. Passengers will now have the opportunity to fly on 124 seat air buses.
McGhee Tyson is also looking to expand TSA Pre Check for passengers going through airport security.
Parking will expand as well. A new economy parking lot with 400 space will open in June.
