(Yahoo!/CNN) -- May 16 marks 35 years since Michael Jackson performed the moonwalk for the first time, Yahoo! Entertainment reports.
The King of Pop introduced the backward-sliding dance move when rehearsing his performance of "Billy Jean" for the "Motown 25" TV special in 1983 while wearing a pair of Florsheim Imperial leather shoes.
Jackson's "magic shoes" went up for auction in late April and were predicted to be sold for $10,000 by GWS Auctions.
"Billie Jean" and the album on which it appeared, 1982's "Thriller," made Jackson the first artist to have a No. 1 pop single, pop album, R&B single and R&B album chart simultaneously, CNN reports.
The music legend died in 2009 at age 50 after experiencing cardiac arrest at his home near Los Angeles.
