KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- It could be just the medicine parents were waiting for: an urgent care just for kids opened in West Knoxville.
East Tennessee Children's Hospital's Urgent Care started seeing patients on Monday at 5 p.m. The center, located at Children's Hospital's West Campus at Westland and Pelllissippi Parkway, will be open nights, weekends, and holidays to give immediate medical attention to children when their pediatricians' offices are typically closed.
"Little children are not just little adults, they have unique needs, they have unique medication needs," Dr. Lynn Massingale, with Team Health, said.
The clinic is set to open 5 p.m. until midnight on Monday through Friday, and 2 p.m. until midnight on Saturday and Sunday. It is always staffed with pediatricians during these hours.
"You can't always get to the doctor's office when they're open," Dr. Ryan Redman, with East Tennessee Children's, said. "So this will be a nice extension of that."
Doctors said the facility would treat children from birth to age 21 for minor accidents or illnesses. A representative with the center said the clinical team at the urgent care center will work hand-in-hand with the child's primary doctor by giving a treatment summary to them within 24 hours of the patient's visit to the urgent care clinic.
Rita Westbrook. M.D., will serve as the medical director for the urgent care center. Hours of the clinic will be 5 p.m. to midnight Monday through Friday and 2 p.m. to midnight on Saturday and Sunday.
