Oak Ridge police investigating two reports of explosions
Oak Ridge Police asked for the public's help gathering information after two reported explosions at area parks.
On Monday, January 15, at 4:55 p.m., police responded to a report of an explosion at Milt Dickens Park. When they arrived, Police found a small crater and evidence that indicated an explosion may have occurred.
Investigators said two white males were seen running into the woods after the incident and were then picked up by a black vehicle.
The other reported explosion happened Saturday, Jan. 13 shortly after 9 p.m. near the area of Blankenship Field.
On the scene, officers found a concrete picnic table they said looked like it had been damaged as a result of an over-pressure or impact-related event.
A witness told police they had seen a black vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed just after the incident happened. Police said no physical evidence at the scene definitively indicated an explosion had occurred, or that the initial report was the result of an explosive device.
ORPD said the investigation remained open and active as of Wednesday evening. Anyone with information on the incidents was asked to contact ORPD at 865-425-3503 during business hours, or 865-425-4399 after business hours.
