Knoxville man arrested for attempted first degree murder following burglary, KPD says

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) The Knoxville Police Department says a Knoxville man was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder after an attempted burglary that left one person seriously injured.

Tykemiem Stewart, 20, was arrested for attempted first-degree murder and attempted aggravated burglary, according to KPD.

The Knoxville Police Department says officers responded to reports of multiple shots fired early Saturday morning.

According to police reports, Stewart and a juvenile attempted to break into a home through the back door on Jersey Avenue.

Police say, the victim left the house to check out the disturbance. While the victim was outside, a car stopped in the street. Stewart and the juvenile reportedly demanded the victim get on the ground at gunpoint.

The victim, Stewart and the juvenile exchanged gunfire, according to police.

KPD says the victim fled the scene in fear.

Police arrived at the intersection of Jersey Avenue and Lindsey Place at 1:30 a.m., according to reports.

Officials say they found 9 mm casings in the victim's backyard along with 45 and 40 caliber casings in the street.

The juvenile was dropped off at UT Medical Center with gunshot wounds to the upper and lower body, according to KPD. His injuries appeared to be serious but not life-threatening.

KPD reports they arrested Stewart without issue.

Officials with KPD say the investigation is ongoing.
