WASHINGTON (WVLT/CBS) -- Osama bin Laden's son and heir is believed to be dead, officials said.

CBS News reported that his son, Hamza, is believed to have been killed in a military operation, though he was not the target of the operation and was not known to be at that location.

CBS News reported that U.S. intelligence monitored conversations among al Qaeda members about whether they should try to keep Hamza bin Laden's death a secret.

The president has not commented on the situation other than to say he didn't "want to comment on that."

Reports indicated that Osama bin Laden had been grooming his son to take over as leader of al Qaeda.
