The Sweetwater Police and Fire Department responded to a report of a possible structure fire at 812 Park Street on Saturday night.

The Monroe County 911 Center received a call about the fire around 7 p.m. by a neighbor. This neighbor reported seeing smoke and flames coming from the roof of the house. The neighbor attempted to enter the residence, but was prevented by the spreading flames.

First responders reported that the roof of the structure was fully engulfed in flames by the time officers arrived on the scene. SFD immediately began battling the fire, which was concentrated in the attic and roof areas.

When the firefighters were able to enter the structure, they found one deceased adult male. His identity is not being released at this time.

Officials reported that no one else was home at the time of the fire.

Detective Kevin Watson with Sweetwater Police was called to the scene to investigate. Watson then called in the Tennessee Bomb and Arson Squad to the scene, as per protocol whenever a death occurs in a fire.

Sweetwater Police Chief Eddie Byrum who was present at the scene, stated, “Any time we have a loss of life in a fire, our community grieves for that family. We are blessed that no one was injured while fighting this blaze."

Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby residences.

No firefighters or officers were injured during this fire.

Agent Travis Jones investigated this incident, and the investigation is continuing at this time.
